TYIS CORE ESSENTIAL VALUES PROGRAM

TYIS incorporates the Core Essentials Value Program
throughout the school.
The strategy of the curriculum is designed to help
better measure goals for character development and
emotional intelligence. It is centered around four "mile markers"
to help guide character and culture change within the school.

MILE MARKERS

SAY IT

Each month, the first goal is for students to be able to simply say the Value Word and the accompanying definition.

KNOW IT

The second step each month is for the students to be able to describe the Value Word and definition in their own words. This goal moves students further toward application of the value, as they are able to think critically about what it means in their lives.

SEE IT

The third goal is for students to look for the Value Word in the world around them. This could mean finding examples in books, in nature, in their peers, or in influential adults. Recognizing the value in others as it happens moves students even closer to the final goal.

BE IT

As students learn more and more about the Value Word each month, the final step is to give them opportunities to live out the value in their own lives.

By guiding students to be able to SAY IT, KNOW IT, SEE IT, and BE IT each month, the impact on students and the student culture is increasingly positive

LIFE SKILLS

TYIS is committed to teaching basic life skills. These are essential skills such as decision making, problem solving, creative & critical thinking and interpersonal relationships. All students, teachers and staff follow, and model these skills with one another. Life skills are integral parts of TYIS outdoor and camping activities. Engaging students in these programs allows them to practice and develop this skill set in daily life outside of the classroom.

Field Trips & Outdoor Programs

Enjoy the richness of hands-on experiences in the city and the countryside. Two annual camp excursions and class field trips constitute an important part of the curriculum at TYIS. In addition to teacher-led field trips to local places of interest to augment the curriculum and provide hands-on learning experiences, all students participate in a three-day Fall Camp (in October) and a four-day Ski Camp (in early February) as part of the regular academic program. Not only do students experience an opportunity to learn outdoor skills away from the classroom environment, they also benefit from learning proper social and communication skills in an active and supportive hands-on environment.
