TYIS
Curriculum
The foundation of our curriculum at TYIS is based on learning outcomes and content standards from a North American perspective.
Our standards, which include the Common Core, are further adapted to focus on a cohesive learning progression across grades to ensure that students master the knowledge necessary to succeed at each level.
Our rigorous curriculum provides opportunities for students to acquire new skills and knowledge in order to express themselves in unique ways.
In addition to the core subjects of study (Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies), co-curricular classes integrate with the curriculum to enrich and enhance the content of the and overall student learning experience. Co-curricular classes are provided once a week for all grade levels and include physical education, swimming, music, art, computer skills and Japanese.
TYIS incorporates a variety of social and life skill-oriented activities and events throughout the school year to increase the quality of student experience. This includes but is not limited to our annual fall and ski camps, the science fair and science field trip to a Japanese school, all school spelling bee, talent show, sports day, seasonal spring concert, and our essential core values program.
Additionally, an ongoing professional development program and evaluation system supports teacher growth in areas such as pedagogy (the study of how best to teach), inclusion and equity, technology, and discipline-specific knowledge.
Overall, the TYIS curriculum incorporates an ambitious focus on developing young learners into becoming independent, creative and proactive global citizens who understand the importance of high academic achievement and acting as responsible global citizens.
High School Curriculum
Our high school curriculum is designed to take the foundational knowledge formed in middle school and further refine and build upon these skills to prepare older adolescents with the academic and social-emotional tools they need for both post-secondary school and adulthood in an ever-more interconnected global society.
Upon completion of the high school program, TYIS graduates will leave with not only their diploma, but with all the tools they need to be a highly competitive candidate for top international universities. Modeled after a U.S. high school experience, students will have an authentic international education experience that will equip them with critical thinking and modern research skills, along with valuable experience pursuing inquiry-based learning both individually and with peers.

A dual track system allows for advanced study in math and science, and a variety of engaging elective options will allow students to pursue their own interests in arts, physical education, foreign language, information technology, and vocational skills. University guidance and SAT test prep support will be provided to support TYIS graduates in making a successful transition to the next stage of their academic careers.
In addition to a solid academic foundation, TYIS high schoolers will have varied opportunities for the kinds of holistic and experiential learning the YMCA is famed for, via outdoor education camps, excursions, and service learning projects that engage students with the community and wider world.
Our high school program aims to produce graduates who are well-rounded, resilient, and ready to make a positive impact in a diverse and interconnected world. By combining rigorous academics, a rich array of extracurricular experiences, and the guidance of a dedicated, supportive, and highly qualified teaching staff, TYIS graduates will develop the skills necessary to navigate and thrive in any environment.

Testing
At TYIS, students are continuously assessed throughout the school year using a balance of formative assessments (to understand their progress in the moment) and summative assessments (to evaluate learning after a series of lessons).
Parents stay informed about their child's development through regular communication with teachers, three report card cycles, classroom blogs, newsletters, or communication apps, and Parent/Teacher Conferences (PTCs).
To further support individualized learning, TYIS integrates specialized programs such as Achieve3000--an AI-powered reading and language arts platform--and Accelerated Reader (AR), both designed to deliver research-based, data-driven instruction for students at all levels of English proficiency.
In addition, all students take the MAP Growth assessment developed by NWEA several times a year. This adaptive test measures academic progress in reading, language, and mathematics by adjusting the level of each question based on student responses. The results provide valuable insight into each child's learning level, helping teachers set personalized goals, guide instruction, and monitor growth over time.
Together, these tools ensure that every TYIS student receives a personalized, data-informed learning experience that supports continuous growth and success.
